Special Projects

In a unique collaboration between Modern Art Oxford (MAO) and PHD Access, we had the opportunity to contribute to a significant community engagement project. The project involved providing a bespoke scaffolding solution to support a distinctive piece of art for a Pop-Up Art Exhibition held at the Clarendon Shopping Centre in Oxford. This exhibition was a temporary event, showcasing contemporary art to the public, and was organised by Modern Art Oxford.

Client's Challenge

The centrepiece of the exhibition was a large-scale sculpture called ‘Boundary Encounters’ by Harold Offeh. This piece required a carefully engineered support structure. The challenge was to design and install a support structure that not only provided the necessary stability but also complemented the aesthetic qualities of the sculpture without overshadowing it.

Solution Provided by PHD Access

PHD Access was approached to design, fabricate, and install the support structure for this sculpture. The requirements were clear: the structure needed to be both robust and visually unobtrusive, supporting the art piece effectively while ensuring the safety of the public.

  1. Design & Conceptualisation:

PHD Access initially presented two design concepts to MAO, both utilising our Tube & Fitting Scaffolding system. After careful consideration by the artist and the MAO team, the design featuring the ‘tree’ concept was approved. This design incorporated a steel column and a concrete base to anchor the structure, with steel scaffold tubes fanning out above to support the ‘fried egg’ frame of the sculpture.

  1. 3D Modelling & Visualisation:

To ensure the design met all aesthetic and functional requirements, we provided detailed 3D models of the structure. This allowed the MAO team and the artist to visualise the final installation and make any necessary adjustments before fabrication began.

3. Material Supply & Fabrication:

Once the design was finalised, we supplied all necessary materials and began fabrication. Our team worked closely with the artist to ensure the scaffold structure was precisely aligned with the artistic vision.

4. Installation:

The installation took place during the week of 19th August, in time for the exhibition’s launch on Friday, 23rd August. Our team of experienced scaffolders ensured that the installation was carried out efficiently, adhering to all safety standards and ensuring minimal disruption to the shopping centre.

5. Deinstallation:

Following the conclusion of the exhibition, PHD Access was responsible for the safe deinstallation of the support structure. This was completed promptly and efficiently, ensuring the area was returned to its original state without delay.

Outcome

The Pavilion Support Structure was a success, providing the necessary stability and support for the sculpture while contributing to the overall aesthetic of the exhibition. The project was completed on time and within the budget, and the exhibition received positive feedback from the public and critics alike.

This collaboration between Modern Art Oxford and PHD Access showcased our ability to deliver bespoke scaffolding solutions for complex and creative projects, while also emphasising our commitment to supporting community-focused initiatives.
