Women in the Industry: Grace’s Story

Published: Sep 26 2024

We are excited to introduce Grace Stevens as a part of our new video for the ‘Women in the Industry’ campaign. Grace’s expertise in IT has been instrumental in shaping the digital landscape of our business. In this video, she discusses her journey into the scaffolding industry and the significant role her father played in it.

From Fashion to IT

An Interesting fact: after finishing school, Grace took a year out to study fashion design and work as a seamster. However, Grace ultimately decided a career path in IT was a more viable option at that time and decided to study Computer Science in University.

THE JOURNEY

It all began with Grace’s father. Watching him take apart computers at home and get excited about Linux command line instantly fascinated her. That fascination eventually led her to study Web Development and ignited her passion for coding. When asked, who was her inspiration she responded:

My dad worked in IT support for a few years towards the end of his career. In the evenings he would get really excited about doing that and he’d be showing me Linux command line, and I just thought that was really, really interesting.

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

When Grace was asked, what would she say to encourage women, she said,

I would say just give it a go. I think some people are sometimes afraid, that they need to be like a maths super wiz to get into tech in general, and that just isn’t the case. I think that anyone could do it. There are so many different roles in the tech industry in general.

Women in the Industry Campaign

Our campaign shines a spotlight on the women at PHD, celebrating their unique journeys and contributions to the construction industry. According to CIOB people, gender diversity is the key to maintaining the current demand in the construction industry.

While women make up 30% of project management roles, according to the Association for Project Management research, the proportion of females in the construction workforce is half of that. (Building a sustainable future for women in construction – CIOB People)

We hope our campaign will encourage more women to join the industry.
