Celebrating 20 Years in the Bahamas!

Published: Sep 5 2017

It all began with an Invitation.

In August 1997, Bernard Dwyer received an Invitation from Sun International Inc to visit Nassau, Bahamas, with a view to providing a suspended access solution for the 2nd Phase of the Atlantis development “The Royal Towers” on Paradise Island. While thinking about the proposition sitting on a white beach, cocktail in hand, the sun shining and the sea breeze softly blowing, Bernard made a really difficult decision and said…. Yes. Well it would be rude not to. The project was challenging, anyone who knows The Atlantis knows that the external façade has many architectural features projecting off it and access was needed for 26 storeys. This was not going to be achieved with conventional scaffolding.

The largest cradle contract ever undertaken.

A bespoke solution was needed so PHD came up with the answer. A suspended cradle access consisting of 94 cradles and 6 spider swing baskets suspended and positioned in tandem around the building. At the time, the sheer number of cradles suspended simultaneously in the 40-week period was one of the largest cradle contracts ever undertaken. Upon completion of the Atlantis Project and building on the goodwill it generated, Mr. Bruno Roberts joined forces and PHD Group (Bahamas) Ltd was formed providing a relationship with the Bahamas whereby PHD has remained committed to the islands.

Sustainability.

As part of their commitment PHD has provided numerous employment opportunities to local Bahamians over the years and continues to do so. They take on local apprentices and offer training and experience to develop their skills in construction whilst paying them a fair wage. PHD have gone from strength to strength working for many of the leading construction companies in Nassau such as; Cavalier Construction, Replay Destinations, Mosko United, Island Hotel Developments and worked on many of the exclusive hotels on the island including;Baha Mar, Ocean Club Estate, Nassau Palm Hotel, British Colonial Hotel, Harbourside Resort, RIU Hotel, Holiday Inn, Pirates Cove, Sheraton Hotel, Wyndham Hotel, Melia and Marriott. And it’s not just hotels that PHD have been successful with.

Carrying on the Success.

This year PHD and Overlay Events Ltd got together and built the incredible Nassau National Beach Soccer Arena, a brand new, 3,500-seat, state-of-the-art facility which hosted the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2017! So what does the future hold for PHD in the Bahamas? Eddie Donaghy the Regional Director of PHD Bahamas is in talks about expanding to the sister islands in the region, Grand Bahama Island and The Exumas.

To achieve success there has been a lot of hard work and effort which PHD will continue to deliver hopefully for another 20 years and more.
